We live in a time in which the effects of our new cultural forms and digital tools are still coalescing. What would a near-future outbreak of political violence in a Western country look like? How could purposeful political killers operate in a world of social media and government surveillance and peaceful populaces? This is what it might look like in Great Britain, within a decade.
Virtually all languages in a vast Eurasian bloc, from Irish to Iranian, English to Hindi, derive from proto-Indo European, the ancient, long-faded family of dialects which have been traced back to a group of Steppe nomads in Southern Russia. This warrior culture probably gave us our modern global idea of a ruling, patriarchal God (the ‘Sky Father’ - Dyus Pater - from which Zeus and Jupiter and Deus and a dozen other names for the divine patriarch derive). They gave us military horsemanship, which would subjugate the Western hemisphere 9 millennia later. They left huge burial cairns (kurgans) and corded ware pottery and bronze and rude iron weapons. The lion’s share of their legacy remains genetic: within a millennia, the male lineages of 90% of the people from modern Ukraine to England were completely wiped out. Mitochondrial DNA indicates that women from the ‘Eastern hunter-gatherer’ and ‘Western hunter-gatherer’ (modern genetic-anthropological categorizations) continued to bear children… with their new husbands and fathers and brothers. Did they mourn the millions of men that had been annihilated?
These epochs are almost completely obscured by the mists of time and loss but we believe that these people revered power and martial vigor, and nature. They superstitiously avoided giving a name to the animal which we call the ‘bear’, believing that if it was named it might appear, and wreak havoc. The modern European words for ‘bear’ often simply originate in the word for ‘brown one’ or ‘brown thing’ (bear, bjorn, etc. - a neat lexical loophole). Aside from bears and horses these people had a special respect and fear of the wolf. It may be that it is from these nomads that we have acquired the modern myth of the werewolf.
‘The Indo-European Wolf Cult’
From time to time, the young men and older boys in a community would be ritually expelled. They would move in packs, generally southward or westward, and find some peaceful farming community or some riverine trading post for silver or meat or grain or amber, and they would slaughter the men and children and the old in their new home, and take the younger women as their own. By such means did their beliefs and language and culture spread, giving rise to a hundred subsequent dynasties and empires. Sometimes, though, the young men would hang around near the land of their birth, and prey upon the natives. These desperate and antisocial characters were believed to be infected with the spirit of the wolf. Danger was especially high during the periods when the full moon was near, as the clear and glowing steppe became passable for nighttime human vision. As time went on random acts of vicious savagery and rapine were attributed to them. The legend of the werewolf would filter down into European and then global culture - the violent young men who would not leave, preying upon the land and people that had borne and raised them, taking lives and fueling fear.
How much is required to break a country? I suppose it depends on the will of its people.
Things really got bad in the mid-2030’s… although if you spoke to many working-class Britons they would tell you that they’d been bad long before that.
For three decades, the voting public in Great Britain had been indicating, arguing, voting, begging for reduced and controlled immigration. The normal political fluctuations and turns of fortune rolled along - Tory, Labour, SNP, Reform - and the will of the demos was almost completely ignored. The media wouldn’t acknowledge this strange disconnection, of course, and the politicians played the politician’s game: talking tough (or not)… and then continuing the same de facto policy which had been in place since the turn of the millennium: open borders, generous social support for non-citizens, special legal protections and programs and, occasionally, a kind of insane consideration for sexual deviants and violent criminals and child abusers. If they’re sent back to their home country, something BAD might happen to them! Perish the thought.
By 2025 it was clear that the politicians were not in control. When it came to immigration policy, judges and NGO directors and barristers and agency managers ran the show. But politicians had (slowly, imperceptibly) allowed the system to sprout up, like a malign fungus, and they bore the spiritual duty of leadership. In 2032 the decision was made: they would be held accountable, along with the judges and their enforcement and persecution mechanism: the police.
Prison Origins
By 2030 virtually every high-security prison in Great Britain were under the control of various Islamist factions, with deep connections to and resources within the various council ghettoes that infected the urban landscape. At first this was regarded as a grave issue of concern for police and prison administrators, but the government (every British government, regardless of party) had a very definite and discrete (and secret) list of agenda items and matters of concern, and Islamist violence and institutional control was not on the list. As violence and drug trade and sexual enslavement of English prisoners became endemic the government dutifully reported on the trends, while naturally minimizing and distorting the figures and avoiding the racial and religious implications. But the government never explicitly named the source of the violence, and so it continued to worsen.
After the Ballymina protests (2025) and the Northampton riots (2027) and the Cambs massacre (2028), the official stance changed, radically. This was never acknowledged, of course. The days of open and straightforward public policy were long gone. Urban crime was met with platitudes and ad campaigns, while secretly the state pulled police back and ceded ground to imams and predatory men. The collapse of working class schools was studied and hundreds of millions of pounds were spent to counter ‘misogyny’ and bullying, while secretly the state rushed to eliminate rigorous testing and conceal evidence of teacher negligence and molestation. More and more of the economy was gobbled up by ethnic blocs of immigrants (making shops and factories and salons effectively ‘no hire’ spots for white Britons) and working class communities sank into morbidity and decay, while secretly the state began to redirect social support resources away from these hostile voting blocs, and to their favored groups. Everything was secret and underhanded. If one relied on the media to inform them as to these trends one would be mightily confused. In his majesty’s prisons, a secret policy of punitive, directed anarchy began to be pursued. The wardens and administrators and guards began working with the Muslim gangs to control the prisons and to punish their real enemies: the growing bloc of nativist ‘agitators.’ Thousands of people were now in prison, both for the riots and for social media posts or even personal communications (informing was rife - touts were everywhere now) and those increasingly anti-government natives (mostly white, but some black and brown as well) were the real object of concern. Rapes and stabbings and burglaries didn’t threaten the power of the regime. Social media use and public demonstrations did. Just as in Solzhenitsyn’s GULAG, the regime allied itself with the violent and the predatory in victimize the real targets: political prisoners.
Working class British prisoners began forming protection cartels and gangs to win strength through unity (although they were still badly outnumbered on the inside) and these gangs quickly acquired a nativist tinge. It was from these groups of beleaguered men that the original Werewolves (in Birmingham and Liverpool and Swansea) drew their strength, and every inter-religious stabbing or rape or extortion attempt consolidated their hold over the non-Muslim prisoners. The natives began to gain credibility for their persecution, for it was common knowledge among prisoners that solitary and assaults by guards were reserved for non-Muslims. The British state (through its prison administrators and correctional officers) had become an enthusiastic partner of the Muslim gangs, and guards began to be stabbed and killed (until then a rarity in the country) by natives. All of this activity fueled working class hatred of the British government.
By 2035 Jamaican gangs had begun cooperating (and, in some cases, allying themselves) with the natives, and a kind of uneasy truce fell over many of the lockups. Meanwhile, the violence outside began to escalate.
By the mid-2030’s, the British Isles were in trouble. Net zero policies and a thicket of regulations had muted economic dynamism and choked growth. Immigration continued unabated, and the old denials regarding social friction and sexual assaults and property crimes were no longer even slightly credible. Large corporations had left and were leaving the place, even London, and brownouts had begun to occur with increasing frequency. Hospitals had regressed to a third-world condition, with flickering lights and noisy, disordered, dirty hallways and NHS doctors and nurses routinely demanding bribes and barter to admit and test patients.
But the real evidence of the malaise - really a kind of slow-motion civilizational death -lay in the communities. Entire neighborhoods - entire towns were effective no-go zones for citizens and social workers and commuters. Old main streets and business districts were chaotic, dilapidated places, full of gambling venues and smoke shops and shambling addicts, and very little else. Kebabs and mosques proliferated. Churches and pubs disappeared. The police patrolled in groups of six, sometimes more. Displaying a British flag was unwise and was treated as a provocative act by the government. The British had become strangers in their own land.
No one can be sure where and when the Werewolves began. There was a kind of shadow organization, but one had to kill a prisoner or a prison guard (initially), or a police officer or a judge (after a few years) to join it, and so the membership was small and difficult for intelligence services and police to penetrate.
The manifesto (simply titled ‘Werewolves’) was released in 2031, but the media studiously ignored its existence for about two years. It seemed clear to observers that there was some kind of official policy (secret, of course) to suppress the document and to contain its spread. That worked pretty well, until judges and police began to die in greater numbers, and the rumors could no longer be contained in the margins. It’s still impossible to find any mainstream media reference to ‘Werewolves’… but everyone knows the name.
Werewolves
The manifesto, the instigator of so much planned bloodshed in the ensuing years, was only five pages long. The first one and a half pages laid out in terse and direct verbiage the history and glories of the British Empire, followed by a clear summation of the country’s problems, with accompanying statistics: 91% of sexual crimes committed by immigrants in 2030; more public funds spent on immigrant social services than on the British military (which was now comprised of more than 40% immigrants); homelessness for natives at more than 3x the rate of immigrants. And so on. “The fault lies not with the people who have come to our country,” the manifesto said. “The fault lies with our leaders, who have ignored and betrayed the wishes of the British and Irish people for two generations.”
It’s uncertain who wrote the manifesto, but it seems likely that it was written by a small committee in Liverpool prison. By now everyone knows the name of Arthur Ledby, the advertising executive whose wife and daughter were killed by a migrant who’d beaten deportation proceedings twice over a period of six years (the killer was later murdered in prison, which crime remains unsolved). Arthur devoted himself to posting anti-government information and statements online, certainly knowing that these would result in judicial muzzling and then imprisonment. He was sentenced to four years in HMP Liverpool after tweeting a list of nonprofit organizations which were facilitating migrant legal defense and release and blocking deportations. It is believed that Arthur began the organization. His death (officially a suicide) is still a fruitful area of inquiry for conspiracy theorists, nearly ten years later.
The penultimate page explicitly stated the values of the group: not racist, not fascist, not political in any specific way as a matter of fact. “Our goal is no longer to bring about policy change or influence elections. These avenues have proven futile for those ordinary Britons who want a reliable border and civil equality for citizens. Our goal is to punish those who have traded our national birthright for funding and status and political power, which has made our towns poorer and our countrymen less safe. Our only goal is revenge.”
The final page of the document specified tactics, which were simple: all police officers and judges and politicians were now potential targets for elimination. The idea was that bombings or killing civilians or affiliating themselves with some political group or party might cause a public backlash. The old impulse toward violent struggle in defense of countries or ideas had mostly died in the West, and an older population and a more feminized bureaucratic structure in the country would react with revulsion if bus riders or shoppers were killed. It is a measure of the deep disgust that average people feel for the British state that these killings (over 200 by now) have been met with ambivalence among most people (save for progressive elites).
It is certain that there is an organization called the Werewolves. Young people are recruited as ‘ghosts’ - people whose online activities and movements and social media activities are intentionally typical, to avoid scrutiny from the ever-expanding surveillance apparatus. It was quickly realized that positing suspicious political messages online or visiting certain websites could invite attention and monitoring and so organizational discipline focused heavily on avoiding any objectionable online activity. At a certain point (usually in their 20’s, it seems) such individuals are given identity documents and several thousand pounds and a target, and are commanded to assassinate that person. Sympathizers have been found recruited in the British Merchant Navy and airport security and within the police, despite the fact that suspected Werewolves and affiliates are punished to a uniquely harsh degree by British courts.
Much to the frustration of the intelligence agencies, however, the Werewolves resisted penetration. Some of the reasons lay in their familiar cellular structure, plus the fact that complicated, planned events and large gatherings were unnecessary. This wasn’t a political party or a protest movement after all. It was a group of angry citizens, many of whom had suffered serious abuse in prison, who felt hopeless and disenfranchised and who turned their energies towards vengeance and murder. Their minimal online activity was a major obstacle as well. The only document that was circulated was ‘Werewolves’ (the manifesto). There were no websites or text message groups or Discord servers. Communication was made hand to hand and face to face, and so the tens of thousands of non-profit and public employees who assiduously monitored the activities (both private and social media) of British internet users gained little.
Mostly, though, the difficulty lay in the lone wolves. Just as ISIS, decades before, had provoked bloody and nihilistic attacks across the Western world fanned by little except some online rhetoric and gory videos, Werewolves incited a small explosion of individuals to use deadly violence against agents of the British state. Were these people even terrorists? They weren’t necessarily trying to accomplish any political objective. According to them they were paying an ancient blood debt for the murders and rapes of British citizens which had been facilitated by the government. Whether or not they were terrorists, they were certainly criminals, and they seemed fueled by little more than rage against the state, and its corrosive and secretive policies.
2039
It’s now 2039, of course, and the problems only seem to be worsening.
In the 1980’s the Maoist Shining Path (The Communist Party of Peru, or Sendero Luminoso - SL) waged a total insurgency against the Peruvian government, killing thousands of trade unionists, police, and bureaucrats. We now know that the Peruvian government was close to crumbling. The SL’s leader, Abimael Guzman, was captured in 1992, and the organization began to weaken soon after.
But the Werewolves have no leader. They have no political program. They’re have (as far as we know) very little formal structure of any kind. Rather than massive car bombs, their activities are specifically targeted, and no civilians have been killed (other than the guards and police and judges and legislators). This is an inchoate yet ferocious group - murderous and terrifying, yet barely a group at all.
The British government has devoted enormous resources to protecting its servants, but guards and police are often vulnerable due to their work, and judges and House of Commons and cabinet members cannot be effectively guarded at all times. 208 killings have been linked to the Werewolves, and the pace of activity only seems to be increasing. The Werewolves have gone from a dangerous prison oddity to a shadowy force that is beloved in many working class neighborhoods. Every mother whose son is stabbed by a prison gang and every father whose daughter is violated by recent arrival takes solace in the idea: the Werewolves will get the people responsible. The murders can be seen as a reaction and a reflection of terrible and hated policies, of distant elites who used poor newcomers as shields to effect a grand and antidemocratic project of total social engineering. Every new inductee onto the list of Werewolves gets media attention (at least internationally - publicizing their names is a criminal offense in Britain) and GoFundMe’s spring up to assist their families, pulling funds from America and Hungary and Russia and Australia. Similar developments have appeared (in muted form) in Germany and Italy and the Scandinavian countries, all struggling with their own mass migration-related crimes and social frictions.
19% of the population of Great Britain is now foreign-born, and many more are first- or second-generation, living in segregated neighborhoods and often enjoying special legal protections and financial benefits. The crime and poverty and social decay associated with this increase has been immense. It is possible that this wave of violence will continue until the British government finally controls immigration. Then again, perhaps it’s too late. Can any situation so chaotic and traumatic for a country be regarded as ‘controlled’, even if the border were finally sealed today? Nevertheless, the continued intransigence of policymakers and elites fuels a terrible anger in the native population. It is this anger which catalyzed and which sustains the Werewolves. Now, they say, the policymakers and their agents bear some of the risk for their policies, and not just working class prisoners or teenage girls. Perhaps that’s enough for the Werewolves.
Non whites aren't natives. Muslim or not, they've all got to go- and the fellow whites who brought them must be punished.
The surprise reference to Peru makes this look like copy pasta to me.
