You won’t have economic development in areas that are wracked by violent crime. Young black men (15-34) are just 2% of the population and commit about half of the nation's homicides. A rate an astounding 49 times that of the average American. Most of their victims are other young black men. A major reason no one cares. They are the country's gun violence problem. Saying that truth makes me a racist in today's world.
The roots of the problem are: the lack of respect for education (read up on the disruption in any inner city classroom and the refusal of black administrators to address it by imposing needed discipline) and the casual acceptance of criminal behavior in the black community exemplified by the refusal to cooperate with law enforcement, and the failure of many (most?) black fathers to love and care for their children and especially their boy children. Those who object to this analysis deny black people any agency over their own lives. They are the true racists. Fix those issues and you have a shot at reducing gun violence in America.
I agree 100%. I think the education variable really affects upward mobility and generational wealth creation… but the criminality and the deeply ANTI-SOCIAL behavior (everything from yelling in movie theatres to shooting strangers over insults) originate with the fatherhood issue. Boys need fathers to show them how to be men. Girls need fathers to show them how to pick men. Without that you get an entire population with elevated rates of impulse control issues (basically quadrupling the failure rate of the ‘marshmallow test’). It all comes back to culture and families create and nourish culture. Government policies which ignore these kinds of fundamental human realities will just spread chaos.
Ironically I see a growing number of black Americans grappling with and discussing these realities… while, in some ways, the pathology is spreading to the non-black mainstream. Poor white folks have declining rates of family stability and rising levels of addiction and aimlessness and irresponsibility. Progressive women no longer support the concept of fatherhood or discipline (although they generally seek stable, monogamous relationships for themselves!).
As with so many other issues the process begins with speaking honestly about social issues and experiences. It’s not racist to highlight social pathologies or criticize teachers’ unions. It might not be cool to criticize black men for abandoning their offspring but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
