It's funny... my brother texted me more or less the same thing. It was a win for humanity, certainly (I love the Genealogy of Morals and The Gay Science, personally... I don't know the timeline of his life well enough to place their writing). However I have to imagine it was a loss for him, at the time and altogether. If he could stand in some omnipotent position and choose: [path A] he lives in fair pain and the misery of loneliness and dies raving in his sister's attic; [path B] he experiences the love of a woman for years and only writes 20% as much. I think he would choose B. I think it's good for young men to keep this in mind when reading people like Nietzsche: he was a desperately unhappy man. It's very good to talk about will and ideals and power and morality but at the end of the day they all shrink before love and friendship. We're just wired that way, for better or worse.
