Inshallah this will be my last piece on elections or partisan politics in awhile! There are other things I want to write about: Queer Theory, mental healthcare, theodicy… and fiction.
Thank you for reading everyone. I’m deeply grateful.
This is not the end of the world, or the end or history, or the end of the US. This is the end of a political era in which a peculiar ideology took hold of too many of America's institutions, including higher education, publishing and the media. Whether you call this ideology "woke-ism" or "identity synthesis", as Yascha Mounk does, it is over - and not a moment too soon. People were warned that a backlash was coming. They did not listen. This is the result.
After the election the Democratic Party (my party) must rethink many of its policies as it ponders its future.
To have a chance at victory Democrats should try listening to the concerns of the working class for a change. As a lifelong moderate Democrat I share their distain for many of the insane positions advocated by my party.
Democrat politicians defy biology by believing that men can actually become women and belong in women’s sports, rest rooms, locker rooms and prisons and that children should be mutilated in pursuit of the impossible.
They believe borders should be open to millions of illegals which undermines workers’ wages and the affordability of housing when we can’t house our own citizens.
They discriminate against whites, Asians and men in a vain effort to counter past discrimination against others and undermine our economy by abandoning merit selection of students and employees.
Democratic mayors allow homelessness to destroy our beautiful cities because they won't say no to destructive behavior. No you can’t camp in this city. No you can’t shit in our streets No you can’t shoot up and leave your used needles everywhere. Many of our prosecutors will not take action against shoplifting unless a $1000 of goods are stolen leading to gangs destroying retail stores. They release criminals without bond to rob and murder again.
The average voter knows this is happening and outright reject our party. Enough.
Can I "consider policies in terms of their real effects, and not their intentions" ??
Probably not. To me, if you believe in an idea/policy then you must accept all of the consequences of it without reservation every up to the ending of the Earth. To take an example, I am a police abolitionist because I don't believe that the state has a right enforce laws against me that I have not personally agreed to be subject to. My highest value is that everyone should be allowed to do absolutely whatever they want. I fully admit that Abolishing The Police will result in anarchy, the deaths of millions, and the complete and total collapse of a nation. I myself will almost certainly die. Does this change my belief? No, because I cannot accept any restrictions on myself no matter the consequences. Sacrificing your own free will for any reason whatsoever is complete anathema to me.
Did I vote for "poverty and crime and war" ??? Well yes, I did. The degrowth polices I believe in will destroy massive amounts of wealth and lower the living standard for everyone. Crime has no meaning when you remove the ability of the government to create laws... but there will be PLENTY of what people today think of as "crime' without laws or police. And war... well, I'll demure on that one but I will say that if the United States embarked on a Roman Empire style program of international conquest and plunder to support a "bread and circuses" policy at home I'd probably be onboard. Speed up the destruction of the human race while at the same time we party our asses off on the spoils in the meantime... yes, please.
I think there are elements of your ideas everywhere in the culture these days. All I can say is that they seem extremely unnatural to me, in that they run against the basic drives and values of humans across cultures and throughout time. The high-flown abstraction of police abolition, the nihilism, the epicurean plans... I suspect these are the kind of thoughts that people have had in the fading days of the Roman empire or Weimar Germany. They're s symptom of a deep cultural malaise. These are not the kinds of things (I mean the impulses behind your ideas) that would ever occur to young and healthy men in hunter gatherer societies or Afghanistan or Central America. Become a man / find a woman / create a family / fulfill your role with strength and honor. These are the imperatives of men as I understand them for 900,000 years. I imagine you could intellectualize why they're trite or passe but I think if you reach deep into your psyche you'll find that what I'm saying strikes a chord. Perhaps not.

The logical fallacy that voting for trump means hating women - I will keep fighting this until he's out of office.
