Thanks for the mention :) We should do a letter exchange sometime.

I'm fairly new to this whole 'writer' thing... I actually spent most of COVID working in a warehouse. Looking back I feel like I missed a lot of solitary opportunities to write! Anyway, I gather that a letter exchange is a series of topical pieces, each one responding to the last. How argumentative are these exchanges? I'm not trying to generate confrontation... I'm just curious. And do you have a topic or topics in mind? I think I'd really enjoy that. Thank you.

I think that these go in order. I can do anything ranging from very argumentative to rather friendly... depending on the issue and what we both believe about it. If we are both polite and good arguers it works well either way.

And depending on how you want to do it, you can read through my stuff ( I even have a table of contents!) and decide what you want to discuss and/or argue about.

Let's hit gun control. You and I seem to agree on the policy and moral implications of gun control but I consider myself a good debater and I'm willing to 'steel man' the pro-gun control position, as well as offer some critiques of your general comments about ethics and gun control law.

Unless you have a different manner in which you'd like to proceed, I will: write a topical letter with and introduction of who you are and what we're up to, and your articles linked in the letter, and then I will address what you've already written ("moral dimension... " and "...two-handed grip") and I will email them to you (email address please).

I know there's got to be a way to mention you throughout the letter so that readers can visit your profile/home page as they become intrigued by your excerpts but I've never done this. The learning curve on Substack seems pretty brief and painless but when it comes to quoting and formatting and links there HAS been a curve for me, so please review my post and let me know if anything seems wonky (or inaccurate)! Also please don't hesitate to comment if you'd like my links to your content or my introduction of you or your quotes/excerpts done differently. It's your work after all.

The ball is checked and in my hands I suppose, so I'm going to start driving to the basket now. Talk soon!

So...

1) I am subscribed to you, so you should have my email :)

2) If you look at my letter exchanges you will see a variety of ways to link to the person you are responding to. These include:

a) Posting their post in your post. If you put down their post address right in the post it will pop up with a whole box.

b) Posting their post address as a link. So, for example, "Von said XXX" and you 'link' the XXX to my post. (more instructions as needed, or maybe a phone call)

c) Having a 'links' section at the end that does (a) for a whole seires of posts.

email me when you find my address :)
