The libertarian techies at Pirate Wires had a great take on this in their latest episode last week. They think Newsom is rebranding himself while also learning how to debate right wingers again.

It's also a good strategy for popularity because *everyone* now knows he interviewed Bannon, and now Newsom is again at the center of attention, and not needing to run again in CA can portray himself as a centrist...

I think it’s very telling that rather than trying to defend the insane leftwing positions Newsom just cedes the field, and flatters his guests. It’s clearly hypocritical but it’s indicative of where the culture is now.

I am, in a sense. I repost my Substack essays on there (although I’ve never seen any indication of crossover traffic) and a meme now and again. I stayed away from X for a long time because if I’d gotten on when I was younger and my identity was discovered I’d be Il unemployable. I dislike the compulsive aspect of it too. I post my shit on BlueSky as well and even during those brief forays I find myself sucked into engagement. I typed out a reply about Michel Foucault being a sadistic pedophile last night before I realized what I was doing. I could easily imagine the same thing occurring… 80x per day.
